Success in the creative industry hinges on grit—passion and perseverance—driving you to complete projects, continually update your skills, and push through challenges.
What ensures success and growth for a creative in a rapidly changing, constantly growing competitive industry?
Many people might have different answers to this question. Some may attribute success to innate talent, others to practice, and some to luck. Recently, I've come to realize that the true answer lies in a four-letter word:
GRIT.
I’m currently reading "GRIT" by Angela Duckworth, which emphasizes a greatly undervalued characteristic. Grit, by definition, can be described as passion and perseverance. In simple terms, grit refers to how long you can stick with something when things get tough and how likely you are to follow through to the end. While this concept applies to almost any industry or profession, here's how it works in the creative industry, with a few simple questions to ask yourself:
1. How many unfinished projects do I currently have lying around? Why haven't I finished them?
2. When was the last time I updated my portfolio/website? Why?
3. When was the last time I picked up a new skill or learned new software? Why not?
If your answers involve a lack of time, make time. Easier said than done, yes, but consider that many top names in any industry didn’t achieve success by adhering to normal schedules. Stay up an extra hour at night, wake up an hour early, or dedicate a bit more time to your craft on the weekend and watch it do wonders! If your answers involve a lack of resources or uncertainty about what to do/learn next, ASK PEOPLE. We live in a time where all the information in the world is at your fingertips, as long as those fingers are willing to type into a simple search bar.
Showing up every day is important, but sticking around when things get difficult and seeing them through to the end are the real defining moments.
